Megan Hensley grew up in Sacramento surrounded by animals, finding in them the companionship and understanding she didn't find with people. Rejected at school, she turned to horses at 15, then the military, then the California Conservation Corps. A backcountry trail crew job in the Sierra Nevada sparked a love of pack animals and led her to farrier training in 2006. She apprenticed under a compassionate mentor who loved donkeys, and on her first day at Saddlepaw Miniatures, she met over 20 miniature donkeys. Nearly 20 years later, she still trims some of those same animals.
Over nearly two decades as a farrier, Megan watched donkeys being systematically misunderstood and mistreated across her industry. She became known as the person who could trim the donkeys nobody else wanted to touch, working without halters or restraints. She learned that donkeys are emotionally intelligent, intuitive, and discerning, not stubborn as the industry insisted. A traumatized mule named Romulus taught her patience: over six months of patient presence, she rebuilt his trust enough to trim all four hooves at liberty, no restraints at all.
When COVID stopped her circuit work in 2020, Megan shifted to teaching. Now her online Donkey Hooves and Health Academy reaches over 1,000 students worldwide. She works semi-retired at Oscar's Place, a donkey rescue, where she mentors three female apprentice farriers. Donkeys have taught her that safety and trust are built on authenticity, not force or trickery. Understanding them as desert animals first, and meeting them where they are emotionally, changes everything.
