You don't have to be in crisis to call.
Karl grew up in South Africa in a von Trapp-like household: privilege without warmth, an Austrian engineer father and a narcissist mother, and the constant vigilance that comes from being a queer kid before you know it. He learned early not to speak about his own needs. When he suspected his sexuality at 27, he had no one to tell because decades of small-t trauma had taught him that nothing he shared mattered. Coming out barely registered with his parents, which hurt more than rejection would have. He left South Africa for London, then chose Australia for safety and connection, but coming out did not end his disassociation. For 20 years after that move, Karl remained absent from his own life, stuck in corporate work that demanded he hide who he was.
At 48, after a court case forced him out of work, everything shifted. During workers compensation, Karl walked 15,000 steps a day, listened to the voices in his head, and discovered that being himself, colorful shirts and earrings included, attracted more clients and genuine connection than trying to fit into what recruiters wanted. He wrote a children's book about transformation that will reach 48,000 retailers. He completed his Reiki 2 certification and started volunteering through an Aboriginal mentorship program, holding space for isolated people. He walked away from his family in 2022 and does not feel much regret. Karl's clearest advice to younger people is simple: sit quietly for five minutes every morning. Understand that the thoughts in your mind are objects you get to move around. The silence is where answers live.
Every story here belongs to the person who lived it. They said yes to sharing it, and we sat with it carefully before it went up. Nothing here is exaggerated and nothing is used without permission. Read how we handle these stories ↗
