Bradley Spillane survived two serious suicide attempts in 2013 and 2014. The second attempt, by hanging, left him with severe fractures to his face and neck requiring extensive reconstructive surgery. He spent months in hospital and woke from his coma angry, not grateful. It took a third attempt before he decided to actually engage with help.
What changed was not therapy or self-help books, but a mate named Wes who had lost his own brother to suicide. Wes told Bradley that if his brother had survived and was doing what Bradley was doing now, that would mean something. That conversation became a turning point. Bradley started sharing his story on a friend's mental health podcast, and that small act of speaking became what he calls his light bulb moment. He realised his focus could shift from himself to listening to other men.
The physical injuries forced him to become a better listener. Without the ability to dominate conversations, he learned to hold space for others. That skill has become central to everything he does now. Bradley hosts the Men's Mental Health Radio Show on Radio Blue Mountains, runs walk-and-talk community events, and simply shows up for men in crisis, offering his time and honesty rather than expert advice.
He still struggles with chronic pain and sleep, still catches himself reverting to old patterns. But he has learned to measure himself not against perfection but against his own capacity to show up, make amends, and help someone else who is where he once was. He is starting a Cert IV in mental health, looking forward to his daughter's visits, and spending time with mates who know his full story. The gold in his cracks is the connection he now builds with others.
